How to Travel Light Without the Hassle!

Published on 3 August 2023 at 13:04

If you're like me, traveling light is a challenge! I want to bring all the shoes to match all the outfits! I always strive to have the perfectly packed make-up bag, the neatly folded clothes, or the organized compartments that I see from all the online influencers.

I end up looking more like the lady above though :)

However, here are some tips I find helpful when trying to pack light for myself or my kids (and it makes for easier unpacking!!)

Traveling with lightweight carry-on luggage can make your journey much more convenient and enjoyable. Here are some tips to help you achieve that:

1. **Choose the Right Luggage**: Invest in a lightweight carry-on suitcase or backpack that meets the size restrictions of the airline you're traveling with. Look for luggage made of durable materials like nylon, polycarbonate, or lightweight aluminum. I love how this one has 3 pieces that work together. This makes organizing so much easier. However, if you're like my son, he has better luck keep all his things in one place and using a harder case. It's also great for sports gear or anything with strange, awkward shapes making putting it in the car difficult.  One of my favorites though is this backpack. It's wonderful for a quick weekend away while still having space for any tablet or laptop.

2. **Pack Only the Essentials**: Make a packing list and stick to it. Bring only the items you truly need for your trip. Avoid overpacking and try to pack versatile clothing that can be mixed and matched.

3. **Use Packing Cubes**: Packing cubes help you stay organized and maximize the space in your carry-on luggage. They also compress your clothes, saving valuable space. This is especially true if you don't have separate bags like the set of 3 shown above

4. **Wear Bulky Items**: If you're traveling with a heavy jacket, boots, or other bulky items, wear them instead of packing them. This can save a significant amount of space and weight in your luggage. I also wear my bulkiest shoes which will save space.

5. **Roll Your Clothes**: Rolling your clothes instead of folding them can save space and reduce wrinkles. It's an efficient packing technique that allows you to fit more items in your carry-on. I didn't think this would work but it actually does make a BIG difference!

6. **Limit Toiletries**: Bring only essential toiletries and use travel-sized containers to minimize weight. This 3 pump travel case is WONDERFUL! I love the look but also the function. I recently had a bottle of foundation break and get everywhere. What a MESS!! I wish I had had these pumps earlier. Another way I limit toiletries is using shampoo and conditioner barsz. This set even comes with traveling cases for when the bars are still damp from a shower.

7. **Leave Non-Essential Gadgets**: If you have multiple electronic devices, consider leaving some of them behind. For example, if you have a smartphone and a tablet, you might not need both.

8. **Digitize Documents**: Instead of carrying heavy paper documents, digitize them and store them securely on your smartphone or a cloud service.

9. **Pack Multi-Purpose Items**: Opt for items that serve multiple purposes. For example, a scarf can be used as a blanket or neck pillow during the flight.

10. **Wear Comfortable Shoes**: Choose lightweight and comfortable shoes for your trip. It's best to wear your bulkier shoes during travel to save space in your luggage.

11. **Consider Laundry Options**: If you're traveling for an extended period, look for accommodation with laundry facilities or bring a small amount of laundry detergent to do laundry in the sink.

12. **Check the Weight**: Before heading to the airport, weigh your carry-on luggage to ensure it meets the airline's weight restrictions using this scale.

By following these tips, you can travel with a lightweight carry-on and enjoy the freedom and convenience of traveling with less baggage. Remember to check the specific airline's carry-on size and weight restrictions to avoid any surprises at the airport.
